Here in the US soccer season for the schools is in winter while Football is in summer. Football players suffer greatly in their massive padding from the horrible heat, while soccer players with a thin shirt on are freezing from running for two hours in very cold temperatures. Why not shift them? The reason is simply money. Schools value greed over student comfort. Soccer hasn't gotten the spectator sport status because of all the rednecks unwilling to come watch the games. The schools get money for hosting football games with tons of people.
It's less running, more tactics and excitement, individual people get the ball more, there's more goals, and skill is more valued that individual speed. There's obvious health benefits of running back and forth across the field for two hours but it's just not as exiting as giving all you got for maybe 40 yards in a small area.
Again you have to look at the money. A stadium for soccer can hold 66 thousand people at full capacity. Given that world cup finals can get 120-660 euros per seat and get filled to max capacity, you have 43 million euros in just one game + advertisers funds, food and souvenir concessions, city tourism and housing, and player product promotions. The players are turned into idols and watched by a billion people who watch the sport in zeal. Soccer requires very little expense, just one kid that owns a ball. Indoor stadiums are much more expensive, but if you'll look at most of the kids playing anywhere, they find it more enjoyable to: make the fields smaller, not have throwins eg. not throw in the ball unless it goes into the street.
Now think of an indoor stadium. What capacity of people could you seat around that? A lot of play will be focused on fighting the ball by the walls, which the audience wont be able to see.
The schools choose soccer over indoor simply because they can use their disgusting football fields to double as soccer fields. If soccer required them more building or funding they just wouldn't have it.
Nike came up with some kind of solution creating caged matches. It got popular, but not enough for companies and groups to start creating cage places to play soccer. There's just too much liability in that it's very easy to tear out hair or break fingers. I wish there was a wikipedia entry about nike cage soccer but I can't find much anymore.
Put This Video on Your Myspace or Blog:It's like the bands. You can't join a concert band just to play an instrument anymore in high schools. I was FORCED to spend hours a day practicing stupid marching in the hot sun to dance around in a halftime of a football game, instead of just playing music, like I wanted to.
It's just better. Over football, basket ball, and any other sport. Too bad people are greedy and do what gets the most money, rather than whats more exiting.
