ArticleAlthough many religions define gluttony as excess eating it's not necessarily just that. Gluttony is also excess anything. It just means overindulgence. In Christianity it's part of the 7 deadly sins but encompasses a lot in its definition. Of course like with any religion peope interpret things how they seem most fair and convennient, which is the reason they joined it in the first place.
Most all religions have gluttony in common. They're idealists and they strive for purity. Don't eat too much, dont drink, no promiscuity, no materialism, limits on meats, no sex of _any kind unless married, etc,etc. You may be surprise Buddhist and muslims follow the same rituals as part of the same ideals. Muslims hold traditional fasting so they may take in practice moderation and minimalism.
Ghandi had read the teachings of Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism. In his late 30s stopped having sex, in the name of purity. Many Buddhists starve themselves on purpose for long periods of time, all in the name of purity.
The basic idea is that emotions and "wants" are not real. They're illusions. The only thing that exists is love when all wants and needs are stripped away. The most idealist community, and more christian and muslim than any christian and muslim community, are the buddhists, that isolate themselves of all wants and needs that are superficial. Chemical urges should not dictate action, or else how are we so different from animals that are just reacting to their biology and settings. The principle is simple, but people have always maneuvered logic to just encompass simple action. Go to church every sunday and you'll be ok. You're a good person.
It's the same with the turn the other cheek ideal. The goal is actually an understanding of evil. There is no evil, just flawed reasoning in a built up culmination of logic. Reactive people cannot be blamed, but observed.
Do you drink a coke when you want it? Do you spend your money on new expensive clothes? Do you _have_ to watch that tv episode? Do you _have_ to buy that cd because society dictates that's what's cool? Need a smoke? Maybe you're one of the new social groups whose reactivity is part of the new wave of marketing aggression. Advertising is cool, and you're a consumer junky. Don't buy these words? You certainly buy everything else friends thow at you. Bah just ranting, at the usual american.
How can they say there is no evil!? Look at all these evil people in society!
Even Christianity says forgive everything and let the judgement be to God, but again, little is the fundamental followed seriously, just manipulated to a random conditional and settled into the back of the objectively reactive bias brain. Think of a child. Everyone agrees, they're innocent. He grows up in an abusive household. He steals, is a bully and does bad things. He's a child not his fault. People always agree, the parents. He grows up. Does the same things and sometimes even worse. All of the sudden people are damning him to hell. Reactive attitudes rarely change.
