It's not that they advertise it's that many T.V. networks have been running internet pervert stories as specials to satisfy people's fascination with psychos.
It all began after good old Yahoo! chat closed it's usermade-chat room doors. Of course, pedophiles are rare, right? If you wrote I'm a 12 year old girl or boy there about 2/3 of the room would send you a PM. It's not just that there are perverts there, there are exploiters that use screen capture utilities and manipulation tools to make their own dirty sites using the kids, and profit.
Yahoo! advertisers cut their funding for awhile and Yahoo! deleted the user chat option all together. Soon after is really when the internet social networks were starting to become really popular.
Before sites like myspace were regarded as pointless. It's a teen angst forum, that isnt even as realtime as a chat room, and is meaningless compared to normal email. The only benefit users could gain there is that they had their own page, that hosted a few pictures. Other sites like deviantart, and something aweful, were booming. They were, uh, it's hard to say this but, purpose oriented sites, not teen personals.
