I had bought a 300$ computer a few months ago to devote completely to linux, and to remove the mandrake linux dual partition on my laptop, since it's now obsolete to mandriva.
I've been changing distributions to see which one I like best. I've tried slackware, debian, knoppix (just for Mexico Trips on laptop), and now ubuntu.
Ubuntu was probably the easiest to install. Basic debain just gave me tons of problems with my video card. I successfully installed it once, but after installing slackware then trying to reinstall it it gave me tons of trouble with "no screens found". At first I couldnt find the command line, which I found really bizarre for a linux distribution.
Ubuntu loaded the operating system to memory then proceeded to install it with a very easy, and lazy interface. It didn't give me any options on how I would want to partition it though.
My dad again tried to save money by buying a garage sale monitor. It's a super old PanaSync s17 that causes nothing but headaches, even with the UV filter. It's a 17 inch but don't let it fool you, it can only run 800x 600 or less and even at 800 x 600 its horridly blurry.
I tried to configure the X11 conf file but apparently I couldn't login as root. After spending an hour trying to figure out why the hell not I found out linux uses the "sudo" command to get root privileges. I guess it's good because it makes for a more secure computer, but for me, it's annoying as hell because I just want it as a developers computer. I have no fear of someone attacking my system because I don't have any software listening on port 80, the firewall bypass port also known as http port, and I have a nice external firewall.
Ubuntu's change screen resolution tools fails to work itself. I had to take off all higher resolutions in the x11 conf for Depth: 24 and then restart the computer to get it to work. Otherwise ubuntu just restarts x11 and abruptly closes all programs.
It's still going to be a killer confuring my gforce card to work properly with linux. Ubuntu's installed didn't auto configure everything.
I tried to run the C compiler on Ubuntu to finally start developing junk.
GCC does not exist.
That's about when I turned ubuntu off. My eyes were all super dry from the horrid evil monitor, and I guess I'd have to find how the heck to configure ubuntu with gcc. A linux distribution without gcc? I don't half believe it yet, I'll have to check again later.
I attemped cygwin for windows for a lazy fix, but compiling with the GCC there gives a 460-500k "Hello World" which is impossible to execture.
Checkout my Mp3 and files search that uses google to find music/albums, anime, games and movies with direct downloads. It's very safe and easy to use, just search for a song, then right click save as to download it.
I make video tutorials on a variety of topics on youtube. Please help me out by adding me as a friend if you have a youtube account. It really helps.
