Microwave + Flaming Toothpick = Plasma and St. Elmos Fire Thunder? Woahhhhh. This got really popular on digg recently. I wonder how many houses are going to burn down because of it. I really want to see this in action.
A toothpick tip is set on fire and mounted vertically on a piece of clay. Turn the microwave on and there's all kinds of fireballs. It's impressive how the microwave didn't cave in on itself. The video states that it becomes plasma, the less observed state of matter.
It reminds me of Myth Busters microwave scene. They found if they put aluminum sheets folded accordian style it would make a nice sparks display. It wouldn't blow up the microwave but it could damage the part that generated the microwaves by reflecting microwaves back at it.
