If you just want to try linux, ask them to send the knoppix cd, which doesnt need to be installed at all. Just stick the cd in, reboot, and use linux. Once you take the cd out your windows computer will have been unaltered, it runs from the CD only, and not the harddrive. It rocks!
VMware is a program, now free, that allows you to run multiple operating systems at the same time. For example a linux cd from the above with your current operating system.

Boingboing is some kind of news site. I saw it before a long time ago, and looking at it now it's pretty much the same. Just a simple news site. I dont see anything special to merit the monstrous pagerank it has.
