Charter Pipeline Internet Sucks

Hadn't done one of these in awhile. I worked on the quiz maker most the day but made this more to complain about disgusting charter communication. My cable internet and TV provider.

Worthless for p2p

While you may get 300k/s downloads you have a worthless 30k upload speed, totally screwing you over for everything p2p.

DNS Problems

Charter High Speed has a major problem in that their name servers have issues resolving youtube stream urls. If I specify a third party DNS server like opendns these work fine. I called charter to complain about this problem since it's been going on for a few months. The cable works fine. The computer works fine. The DNS servers do not. It is not superior powers of speculations that say this, it's powerful tracerts and other networking tools that diagnose this problem as legitimate. Sometimes it wasn't just youtube, it was many other sites. When using openDNS it worked fine.

The Charter Call

It went something like this... I call in wait 20 minutes.

Me: Charters DNS servers aren't resolving certain sites.
Charter: Please give us all your personal information.
Me: Ok. Blah etc etc etc
Charter: Ok we'll transfer you.
Me: ugh...*Waiting 20 Minutes*
Charter: Hi. I understand you're having problems with your cable internet today?
Me: Yeah. There are a lot of domains that aren't resolving under charters DNS servers.
Charter: Is... are you are having problems getting online?
Me: A lot of sites work, but some like youtube, when I do a traceroute, it gets stuck somewhere in charters servers and times out.
Charter: Please turn off your computer?
Me: What!?
Charter: Turn off your computer please.
Me: I told you I run a trace route it goes through my modem just fine, it gets stuck in the DNS servers. It's been going on for a long time.
Charter: In order to help you I need to turn off your computer.
Me: ...omfg....*turns off computer*
Charter: Turn off your modem. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in.
Me: ...ok (usually the cable companies say 5 seconds. it takes less than half second for the electricity to stop running through the device...)
Charter: Turn everything back on.
Me: ... >_<...
Charter: Go into internet explorer.
Me: I'm using debian and the ping still times out.
Charter: What I need you to do is open internet explorer.
Me: ....asdf;llk... um yeah, it doesn't work.

End

He ended up giving me charter DNS IPs instead of having the DNS server automatically detected, which doesn't make much difference since they were the same IPs being automatically detected.

Oh well. Charter cable also disgustingly set some disgusting religious channel that's hardcore republican as the default channel. I hate you charter... I dont have an extra phone cable to use earthlink, Time warner/comcast have ties with my childhood enemy #1, AOL... Bah. Bless you bastards at openDNS for adstuffing my no longer working URLS but making youtube work.

Charter is terrible for gamers. Back when I used to play against my friends sporadic disconnects would make it useless and don't dare playing when there's a thunderstorm or rain. Charter always manages to fail for half the day. When asked for a refund they seem started you think you should be creditted if it was the weather's fault. It was only out half the day, not the full day, as if you had all the freetime in the world.
