A lot has happened without filling out a "journal entry". I'm working on a bunch of different things.
I modified a bunch of stuff on this blog and jimmyr.com.
The server runs amazingly fast now. Before it was choking on all the traffic I had. I'm hosted on serverbeach.com. It was a pretty big upgrade considering the old host had mysql 3.1 I think. I got it about 2 years ago and even then it had outdated software, stupid fredora was annoying to work with on webmin. Basically I got a dualcore for 10$ more a month than I was paying before. Awesome. CentOS only came with MySQL 4.x so I had to manually update it to 5. I didn't get too many errors using a mysqldump either, I was very surprised. I was worried I'd have to spend the week making and running some crazy regular expressions through the 500mb sql dump of eliteskills to fix syntax errors.
Also before I was using a disgustingly hackish mod_rewrite trick to assign the server to both domains. The previous trouble from the first time I used virtual hosts on apache was because I didn't see that in the httpd.conf "listen: 80" was already placed waaay above the virtual hosts example and uncommented. Pretty simple but the last time I upgraded I had a lot of trouble enabling the virtual hosts. It kept giving me errors about the port already being in use. I also setup the apache logs not to log when the server loads css gif jpg ico spiders.txt js. It just massively clutters the logs and makes parsing them a lot slower. I wonder if mod_deflate hurts the serverload a lot. It seemed to take more heat when enabled.
The server got its chance to see how it did with massive traffic. I was on the front page of digg, del.icio.us, reddit and metafilter all day. In all of them I reached the top voted post at one point or another. Here are the statistics for the day. I was also receiving tons of traffic from eliteskills.com and this video blog. The server continued running extremely fast.
I want 2 gigs of ram, not 1 gig. Aparently serverbeach wants to charge me 20$ a month for a 1 gig stick of ram. I've been with them for about two years so I told them I want it cheaper or I want a one time fee of 200$. They refused 200$ and closed the ticket! The stupid ram is at most $85, a 120$ service fee isn't bad, but they rather bleed me for 240$ a year for the same, devaluing stick of ram.
I'm trying to setup my old quiz maker to get integrated into my blog maker to mess more with the open courseware stuff. I plan to take notes with my special editor then have the quiz maker generate a quiz based on the notes. First I have to make some modifications to make missed questions appear more frequently and iron out old bugs. I also want to add a new ajax interface to it so as not to confuse people, like it was doing before. I might setup a new section just for taking notes of stuff I learn from OCW or other sites. There's a lot of cool stuff with data organization that can save a lot of time in the future.
Checkout my Mp3 and files search that uses google to find music/albums, anime, games and movies with direct downloads. It's very safe and easy to use, just search for a song, then right click save as to download it.
I make video tutorials on a variety of topics on youtube. Please help me out by adding me as a friend if you have a youtube account. It really helps.
