Ad Efficiency

Have you noticed the ads these days have changed? The most common ad where these shaky fake windows boxes that or a box flashing annoyingly bright and distracting color combinations to get your attention. They're still around, but a new type of ad has entered the scene. Survey questions with the sweepstakes prize. They ask questions people feel very strongly over like music, celebrities, politics. Do you hate American Idol's Simon? Who should have won the election? Who is this celebrity? Then you're taken to some random site that seems to have nothing to do with the question you were so eager to give an opinion over.

Who should have been president? GAH! Kerry!!!! Robbed...

It's well known that statistics are skewed because mostly people with negative opinions will call in to report. Those who are satisfied are less likely to report anything. This understanding has been put to work with marketting. People fall for it and get confused by the form just asking for their email. Some even bother filling out their email thinking that the primary purpose the site is to collect opinion statistics. The primary purpose of these ads is to get your email address for future solicitation.

What for?

It may seem obvious to some but taken that it stole the crown from the shaky psycho ads ment to give the eldery seizures and confusion spells, it has shown to be a lucrative success. Marketters would never put up an ad to say, "give us your email so we can spam you".

What's the big deal?

Tricking consumers into spam should not be supported. It's a mild form exploitation but it is still efficient. The "free X-box" and playstation ads worked in the past, but they targetted obviously young people who are less likly to buy from spam. They're just spammers. If you have an ad on your site tricking people into being spammed, please, take it off. Unfortunately, they're the highest paying ads, and people like money.
