Hosting a Site From Your Computer

Overview and Requirements

If you want to host your site for free with as much website space as your PC has, php, perl, python, whatever and no bandwidth requirements, it is possible, but, you must have your computer always turned on so that your site will be up and you need a fast connection so 3 or 4 people browsing the site don't make it lag horribly. You must also becareful not to be uploading or downloading at your full capacity.

Getting Started

See our getting started with mysql and php article and download apache. Once installed you'll be able to access http://127.0.0.1, your local address. C:\program files\Apache Group\Apache\Htdocs\ contains the html pages, so adding an index.html to this folder would allow you to see it from your local address. http://localhost/ also works.

Does it Work?

Go to canyouseeme.org and check if it can see port 80. If not, you'll have to configure your firewall or see if your IP blocks it. If it said it worked, go to whatismyip.com. Copy your IP into the address bar: http://whatever.numbers.here.sdf/ . If it worked, you're hosting a page! You can use speed check to make sure others can see it. Kind of ugly though, huh? IPs are difficult to remember.

Free Domain Name

Go to No-IP and register a domain name, well, a subdomain anyway. You'll be able to forward it to your IP, making for a much easier to remember address.
